As the name suggests, Singular’s internship programme is one of a kind. Firstly, it gives a holistic experience of what it means to be an investment analyst from financial modelling to visiting corporates. There is the opportunity to attend briefings by research analysts at banks, attend investment conferences and even accompany portfolio managers to visit senior company management. In comparison to my past internship experiences, Singular has given me more responsibility and autonomy early on. The programme at Singular is not limited to staring at Excel spreadsheets all day or photocopying (actually, there is none of that!). Be prepared to give presentations on non-finance related themes and having to try new things. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the internship. Both by the tasks I did and the diversity of the other interns. Don’t be put off working for a boutique fund. I have found my experience more fruitful and enjoyable than other big names on my CV.

My experience at Singular had been worthwhile because of the opportunity as well as the steep learning curve that were provided. Just like the other interns, I had the chance to meet with sell-side analysts and managements of public listed companies in order to grasp a better understanding of brokers and managements’ perspective on the company and industry. While carrying out company research, I also learned about the importance of thinking critically about company’s business model and competitive dynamics. This struck me as relatable to a quote by Charlie Munger that “People calculate too much and think too little” or otherwise people known to Mr. Teoh (Founder) as ‘desktop analysts’.

It was only until I myself started the internship that I found out what an incredible opportunity I was given. Mr Teoh and other mentors guided me throughout my time at Singular, ensuring that I was getting a truly enriching experience. Albeit my limited knowledge on accounting and finance, the discussions and presentations that I sat in have allowed me to expand my knowledge on this field exponentially. Additionally, each intern was given an independent research project to present to the company. My research on the history and geopolitics of changing world systems has been fulfilling. This internship has allowed me to grow in more ways than one can imagine.

Of the many valuable aspects of this experience, one that had the most profound impact on me was the mentors. They were very helpful and eager to share their knowledge, insights and advice. They'd also make sure that you have as much opportunity as possible to do things and meet people who would enrich your learning process. You'd be inspired to become a better mentor yourself!

I’m glad that I made the right choice to complete my internship program at Singular. I was given opportunities to attend meetings and conferences to meet professional analysts and top management of several listed companies. Moreover, I got the chance to visit sites, and get additional experience by being part of the video production team to film at a few top companies. What I learned most was from the intellectual discussions, and the valuable feedbacks provided by the mentors. Interns are always encouraged to express creative ideas and to have more in-depth thinking. All in all, my internship at Singular has been eye-opening and a truly rewarding experience!

Singular's internship program is well designed in all aspects and my experience here is simply incredible. The work is very challenging and they came in many different forms. Be ready to get out of your comfort zone as Mr Teoh has high expectations for everyone in the office. Curiosity and creativity is encouraged and support is provided when needed. What I enjoyed most is the freedom given to approach each project. I was given full autonomy on the project that I chose, and Singular provided significant support to help me succeed. The company is known for their flat structure and its openness. Singular is agnostic to your education background and past experiences. In fact, Singular celebrates diversity.  The internship program welcomes you if you have the passion to learn and try new things. Coming from an engineering background, I had no prior experience in the finance industry. However, I was able to fully experience working in an asset management company. It was a worthwhile and rewarding experience.

It’s your attitude not your aptitude that determines your altitude”. In Singular Asset Management (SAM), very often that I am always being corrected by the founder of this company- Mr.Teoh, for saying “I will TRY my best”. Instead he told me firmly that “there is no TRY, you must DO it”. His words were imprinted in my mind and I was able to learn more than I was expecting from this internship by doing my best on every delegated tasks. Throughout this internship, I learned to think critically as an investment analyst via conducting research on public listed companies and attending companies’ briefings. I would not have gained much intellectually without the guidance from the investment team in SAM. Apart from doing investment research, I was assigned with other minor projects such as conducting trainings for SAM staff on personal development. I am also glad that I was able to work with a group of passionate staffs in a Fund Raising Charity event for their CSR project. In short, I would highly recommend anyone who’s interested in investment to join SAM internship program and gain more insights about the life of an investment analyst.

If I were to sum up my internship here in three words, they would be: organised, warm, intellectual. The internship programme at Singular Asset Management (SAM) is very organised and structured from day one. The tasks given are generally challenging and deadline driven. They revolve around breaking down a company or industry qualitatively and quantitatively, understanding its key drivers and finding a case for investment. Next, the people here are warm and very receptive to new ideas and suggestions. Lastly, the company has a very intellectual atmosphere with investment books and a wealth of reading material littered around the office. The company have footprints across Asia, so one can gain considerably exposure to international markets through the internship. Senior analysts love talking about business and finance and I would advise future interns to communicate a lot with them.

My internship at Singular has been nothing short of an invigorating learning experience. The first thing I noticed was the very friendly and flat culture present in Singular where everyone was always willing to have a chat or lend a helping hand. I was given a main research project that was on a property developer in Philippines and I spent the bulk of my time carrying out company research and macro analysis. My mentor was always willing to immediately set aside some time for me whenever I approached him with queries. In between, I would be given some minor assignments by some of the other staff in the office. Also, Mr. Teoh always took great interest in my progress and was also happy to help me with whatever issue I had. Apart from that, I got to attend a conference organized by Maybank, which covered the macroeconomic climate in the world today as well as some equity analysis. This was a very enriching experience for me as I got to meet and socialize with investment analysts from many different firms as well. Overall, this experience has been very beneficial for me and the learning curve is relatively steep.

You’re not just an intern”. These were words of Mr Teoh that I will never forget. It set a completely different tone than what I expected of the internship. And he really walks the talk. Throughout my time at Singular, I felt like I was actually part of a cohesive team. I was given ample space to have my opinions heard, allowed to explore areas unknown to me, and most of all, entrusted with tasks that seemed monumental as well as of significant importance to the company. I have always wanted to experience the life of an Equity Analyst, and Singular Asset Management did not disappoint. Throughout my internship, I carried out company analysis and market research across various financial markets. I was also given the opportunity to attend investment conferences, Bloomberg Terminal training sessions as well as multiple meetings with management of public listed companies. The most important lesion I learnt from all of this was that it’s not about finding the right answer; it’s about asking the right questions. The frequent intellectual discussions, guidance and feedback provided by the brilliant investment team are where I learnt the most.
