Singular’s internship experience has been nothing but positive. There are so many avenues for you to learn and grow during the programme, be it through research and financial modelling, giving and receiving training presentations or meeting the management of companies. Alongside this are many opportunities to work on non-finance related projects such as ESG, marketing and technology to broaden your knowledge further. While doing so, you will be supported by a team of consummate professionals who are more than happy to share their experience with you and have an active interest in your development. I am very grateful for the opportunity I was given and can earnestly recommend the programme to anyone with even a passing interest in the financial industry.

My experience at Singular has been extremely rewarding. I feel that Singular gives the perfect balance between structure and autonomy. While I had to do a lot of my own independent research for my assignments, I also found that help was always there whenever I needed it. I have done many internships before this but I have never seen a company give as much attention to their interns as Singular does. The tight knit nature of the office culture also allows for meaningful conversations with other colleagues. Throughout my time here, I have learnt a lot about the finance industry and how investment analysts approach companies. The high expectations and friendly people make it the perfect professional environment to thrive in. My time here has been very worthwhile and I am confident that I will be able to apply the knowledge and skills that I have acquired at Singular in my future career.

I have always wanted to experience interning at a buy-side company and interning at Singular fulfilled that wish. My tenure at Singular has been nothing but a very valuable experience under my belt. I learned more than I ever expected. The whole experience was a very steep learning curve for me. The flat and open culture of the company made it easy for me to get to know the staffs of the company and asks for help as they are always willing to assist you. From the first day of internship, I had been given the task to do equity research on a company. Besides that, I had the opportunity to attend conferences, company visits, and investor relations conference calls of various companies. All in all, my internship at SAM definitely gave me a small taste of the real world. It also helped reinforce my knowledge of responsibility, focus, drive, and ambition.

The internship at Singular Asset Management (SAM) gave me insight into what a career in an asset management company would be like and equipped me with the skills needed to start a career as an equity research analyst. From the first day of the internship, I was given an opportunity to attend an investor relations conference call with a well-known listed company in Hong Kong. Moreover, I had chances to attend meetings with sell-side research analysts, where I was encouraged to ask questions and participate actively in the discussions. The financial industry is broad, and so are the options when it comes to choosing careers in finance. The opportunities to attend meetings with outside parties and meeting with people from different types of finance careers were valuable for someone like me who aspire to work in the industry. Although I did not have prior experiences in equity research, my mentor and colleagues were always there to help and support my learning process. I am confident to say that the internship at SAM was an invaluable experience for me to build the foundation for investment as well as to understand the complex and broad financial industry.

Spectacular and liberating. My experience here has been one that I will cherish. Mr Teoh and the rest of Singular’s team were incredibly supportive and receptive during my time here. While there is opportunity to attend conferences, analyst briefings and corporate meetings, Singular offers much more. The programme in Singular is structured in a way that enables me to also pursue my personal motivations (non-finance). I gave a presentation on hate crime which enabled me to explore social themes that I am passionate about. It gives me the autonomy to carry out my assignments which is refreshing compared to my other internship experiences. Overall, I can confidently say that this has been the best learning curve for me so far.

The Singular internship struck a great balance between training and giving us the independence to stretch ourselves on our own projects. For each project our seniors gave us the tools and advice to analyse companies and their assets, while allowing us to plan and research in our own way. The variety of projects was interesting and taught me how to analyse the details of a particular company and the larger political and economic context. The environment together with the other interns was hard working, but also very friendly and welcoming. Singular made me feel part of the company culture and supported me to grow professionally. Singular is an excellent company to intern with and there are many things to learn from the company and its people. Thank you to the Singular family!

As the name suggests, Singular’s internship programme is one of a kind. Firstly, it gives a holistic experience of what it means to be an investment analyst from financial modelling to visiting corporates. There is the opportunity to attend briefings by research analysts at banks, attend investment conferences and even accompany portfolio managers to visit senior company management. In comparison to my past internship experiences, Singular has given me more responsibility and autonomy early on. The programme at Singular is not limited to staring at Excel spreadsheets all day or photocopying (actually, there is none of that!). Be prepared to give presentations on non-finance related themes and having to try new things. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the internship. Both by the tasks I did and the diversity of the other interns. Don’t be put off working for a boutique fund. I have found my experience more fruitful and enjoyable than other big names on my CV.

My experience at Singular had been worthwhile because of the opportunity as well as the steep learning curve that were provided. Just like the other interns, I had the chance to meet with sell-side analysts and managements of public listed companies in order to grasp a better understanding of brokers and managements’ perspective on the company and industry. While carrying out company research, I also learned about the importance of thinking critically about company’s business model and competitive dynamics. This struck me as relatable to a quote by Charlie Munger that “People calculate too much and think too little” or otherwise people known to Mr. Teoh (Founder) as ‘desktop analysts’.

It was only until I myself started the internship that I found out what an incredible opportunity I was given. Mr Teoh and other mentors guided me throughout my time at Singular, ensuring that I was getting a truly enriching experience. Albeit my limited knowledge on accounting and finance, the discussions and presentations that I sat in have allowed me to expand my knowledge on this field exponentially. Additionally, each intern was given an independent research project to present to the company. My research on the history and geopolitics of changing world systems has been fulfilling. This internship has allowed me to grow in more ways than one can imagine.

Be ready to get out of your comfort zone as Mr Teoh has high expectations for everyone in the office. Curiosity and creativity is encouraged and support is provided when needed. What I enjoyed most is the freedom given to approach each project. I was given full autonomy on the project that I chose, and Singular provided significant support to help me succeed. The company is known for their flat structure and its openness. Singular is agnostic to your education background and past experiences. In fact, Singular celebrates diversity.  The internship program welcomes you if you have the passion to learn and try new things. It’s your attitude not your aptitude that determines your altitude”. In Singular Asset Management (SAM), very often that I am always being corrected by the founder of this company- Mr.Teoh, for saying “I will TRY my best”. Instead he told me firmly that “there is no TRY, you must DO it”. His words were imprinted in my mind and I was able to learn more than I was expecting from this internship by doing my best on every delegated tasks. Throughout this internship, I learned to think critically as an investment analyst via conducting research on public listed companies and attending companies’ briefings. I would not have gained much intellectually without the guidance from the investment team in SAM. Apart from doing investment research, I was assigned with other minor projects such as conducting trainings for SAM staff on personal development. I am also glad that I was able to work with a group of passionate staffs in a Fund Raising Charity event for their CSR project. In short, I would highly recommend anyone who’s interested in investment to join SAM internship program and gain more insights about the life of an investment analyst.

If I were to sum up my internship here in three words, they would be: organised, warm, intellectual. The internship programme at Singular Asset Management (SAM) is very organised and structured from day one. The tasks given are generally challenging and deadline driven. They revolve around breaking down a company or industry qualitatively and quantitatively, understanding its key drivers and finding a case for investment. Next, the people here are warm and very receptive to new ideas and suggestions. Lastly, the company has a very intellectual atmosphere with investment books and a wealth of reading material littered around the office. The company have footprints across Asia, so one can gain considerably exposure to international markets through the internship. Senior analysts love talking about business and finance and I would advise future interns to communicate a lot with them.

My internship at Singular has been nothing short of an invigorating learning experience. The first thing I noticed was the very friendly and flat culture present in Singular where everyone was always willing to have a chat or lend a helping hand. I was given a main research project that was on a property developer in Philippines and I spent the bulk of my time carrying out company research and macro analysis. My mentor was always willing to immediately set aside some time for me whenever I approached him with queries. In between, I would be given some minor assignments by some of the other staff in the office. Also, Mr. Teoh always took great interest in my progress and was also happy to help me with whatever issue I had. Apart from that, I got to attend a conference organized by Maybank, which covered the macroeconomic climate in the world today as well as some equity analysis. This was a very enriching experience for me as I got to meet and socialize with investment analysts from many different firms as well. Overall, this experience has been very beneficial for me and the learning curve is relatively steep.
